Honoring a Decade of Compassion: Annette Miller, RN Reflects on 10 Years with ALS United Mid-Atlantic

August 2025 marked ten years since Annette Miller, RN, joined ALS United Mid-Atlantic serving ALS patients and families in central Pennsylvania. Over the last decade, she has shown compassion, dedication, and unwavering support for people living with ALS and their families. As she approaches retirement, Annette reflects on her meaningful career and the profound impact of her work as a nurse.

In her role, Annette maintains a caseload of about 70 patients at a time, coordinating care and ensuring that each person receives the resources and support they need. Through her work at the ALS Certified Treatment Center of Excellence at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, she has worked directly with patients and care teams to manage complex needs and improve quality of life.

“My job is to help people live with ALS and have the best quality of life possible,” she shares. “I not only provide information and support, but I also make sure they have what they need to make living with this disease as ‘easy’ as possible. I listen to them as they express what they’re experiencing and then make recommendations as to how to deal with it. I order equipment, services, and medications to cope with the symptoms and limitations they are facing. If it’s something I can’t help them with, I find someone else who can.”

Annette’s commitment extends far beyond her medical expertise., It is rooted in empathy, listening, and advocacy. Over the years, she has walked beside hundreds of families through some of their most challenging moments, helping them navigate the complexities of ALS with dignity and grace. She has even joined her patients in advocacy at the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

As she prepares to retire, Annette reflects with deep gratitude on her time with ALS United Mid-Atlantic.

“I have absolutely loved my time with this organization! I have never worked with so many deeply caring, compassionate, knowledgeable professionals. The mission is completely patient, family, and caregiver oriented, everything we do is to help people live with a very devastating disease.”

She adds, “People with ALS are just amazing as they face their journey with such positive, determined attitudes. I have mixed feelings as I leave this job and the nursing profession. I have met so many wonderful people and feel so blessed to help them at the most difficult time in their lives. I am forever changed by the people I have been blessed to serve.”

We can just be friends, having fun together. Our Annual Luncheon at Longwood Gardens and the Hershey ALS United Walk are favorites, but I also love the Annual Celebration which gives us a chance to meet and thank those who make so many things possible.
