April 2025 Volunteer of the Month: Dr. Stacy Lewin Farber

Dr. Stacy Lewin Farber is determined to make an impact and leave a legacy on behalf of all people diagnosed with ALS.

In February 2021, Stacy Farber received the diagnosis that would change the trajectory of her life. She was an obstetric anesthesiologist and she had studied ALS while in medical school, but she never thought it would be something that would impact her.

After the initial shock of her diagnosis, Dr. Lewin Farber quickly became determined to use her skills and expertise to make a difference. She started to learn everything that she could about ALS and the progress in research, from drug trials to insurance and support groups.

What Stacy found was that she was now part of a wider world of ALS advocacy. She offered her talents to ALS United Mid-Atlantic, helping to guide the board’s investments in research and adding her voice to advocacy efforts by testifying in front of committees in her home state of New Jersey.

Stacy’s entire family, including her devoted husband Dan and her sons Zachary and Ethan, have supported her in all her efforts. Together, they organized one of the top teams for the Philadelphia ALS United Walk and joined the Philadelphia Phillies for ALS Awareness Night.

As the science of research progresses, Stacy’s insights into the science of ALS have become even more important. Stacy joins her friend John Russo, who is also living with ALS, to assist the ALS United Mid-Atlantic board’s research committee as they approve funding for local projects and collaborations with organizations like ALS-TDI.

Collaboration is important to Stacy. She has lent her talents to ALS groups from across the country, listening to top experts and building community with others who have been diagnosed.

Through all her work, Stacy is not just working to fight ALS today, she’s building a legacy for the future. She has participated in the HEALEY platform trials to advance studies into new therapies, and she shares her experience with others to show how they can be empowered through research as well. Stacy knows that the cure may be years down the road, but she also knows that her activism will be part of that solution.

As uncertainty grows about national investments in scientific research, Dr. Stacy Lewin Farber’s advocacy and knowledge have been more important than ever. In March 2025, she spoke to lawmakers about the critical need to invest in the ALS cause and she continues to search out every venue to use her voice to shine a light on research. When Dr. Stacy Lewin Farber speaks, people listen.

ALS United Mid-Atlantic is honored and proud to work with Stacy, Dan, Zach, and Ethan to advance the ALS cause. Dr. Lewin Farber sets a positive example for everyone, encouraging others to use their power to do good in the world. As new treatments and better care become available, Dr. Stacy Lewin Farber and her family will know that she is part of that progress.

Thank you, Stacy, for all that you do for the ALS cause.
