Free Preventive Dental Care Provided by HACC Dental Hygiene Students

On Friday, March 20th, students from the Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) Dental Hygiene Program provided free preventive dental cleanings and oral care education at the Select Medical Building Dental Clinic on HACC’s campus. The event offered an opportunity for people living with ALS in the Harrisburg community to receive professional dental services and guidance at no cost.

People living with ALS attending the event received preventive dental cleanings performed under supervision by HACC faculty and experienced nursing staff. At the same time, caregivers were given practical instruction on daily oral care routines, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, tips for maintaining healthy gums, and guidance on recognizing early signs of dental issues. The combination of direct care and education helps to ensure long-term oral health for families in the community.

Kerstie Keebaugh, RN, Staff Nurse at ALS United Mid-Atlantic, expressed her enthusiasm for the program. “It’s wonderful to see students applying their skills while helping our community maintain healthy smiles. Preventive care and education can make a big difference in overall oral health.”

The event was supported by ALS United Mid-Atlantic care team members Kerstie Keebaugh, RN, and Erin King, RN, who assisted the students, coordinated patient appointments, and provided guidance to attendees throughout the day. All services were provided free of charge, ensuring that individuals and families who may not regularly access dental care could take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Through initiatives like these, HACC Dental Hygiene students gain valuable practical experience, and the community benefits from preventive dental care that can improve overall health and wellness. By combining education with service, the program reinforces the importance of oral hygiene and supports the college’s mission to foster community engagement.

HACC’s Dental Hygiene Program continues to be a vital resource for the Harrisburg region, emphasizing that preventive care, education, and professional guidance are key to maintaining healthy smiles for patients of all ages.
