Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center Open House Showcases Advances in ALS Research

On Thursday, May 8th, the Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center held an Open House to highlight advances in ALS research. During the tour, the scientific team showcased the Weinberg ALS Center labs and affiliated labs to demonstrate progress across disciplines.

Drs. Pasinelli, Trotti, Haeusler, Illieva, and Jensen proudly shared the work of their teams. ALS United Mid-Atlantic staff, board members, and volunteers learned about the details of many ongoing studies, including:

  • How protein clumps in astrocytes cause release of products that are toxic to neurons
  • How RNA structure mitigates damaging clumps in FUS-ALS
  • Using mini-brains derived from patient cells to study how inflammation spreads through the brain
  • Using patient-derived skin cells to explore mitochondrial dysfunctions and neuroinflammation in ALS
  • Testing new models in mice to better understand ALS
  • Looking at RNA in blood to see how scientists can detect ALS earlier and track how it progresses
  • Shaping the future of Assistive Technology
  • An observational study with human biofluids and tissue bank
  • The HEALEY ALS Platform Trial
  • Pridopidine EAP study
  • Clene CNM-AuS EAP study

In addition to these specialized ongoing ALS research studies, the Open House featured testimonials and a Q&A with four ALS patients: Thomas Grassi, Gregory Petry, Bryan Rosica, and Doug Yocum.

ALS United Mid-Atlantic is proud to partner with the team at the Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center to provide quality ALS care and to support groundbreaking research to better understand the nature of the disease and advance new treatments.
