Staff Spotlight: Gail Houseman, RN, MSN-APRN

Gail Houseman, RN, MSN-APRN, has worked for ALS United Mid-Atlantic for almost 25 years. As a regional nurse coordinator, Gail works tirelessly to support people with ALS and their families. This disease affects not only the person with ALS but also their entire family. Gail helps these families manage the physical and emotional aspects of ALS. This can include physical care of the person with ALS and education about medications, equipment, and supplies.

As a part of her work, Gail also promotes our Mindfulness Program and co-facilitates the Newly Diagnosed Support Group. Support Groups provide a safe space for people to share their experiences and feelings while hearing from experienced professionals like Gail.

Gail has touched the lives of so many people impacted by ALS. Her reach goes beyond her work at the clinic and supporting families, as she also runs our Visiting Volunteer program.

ALS United Mid-Atlantic’s Visiting Volunteer (VV) program is in its 23rd year. Gail selects and trains visiting volunteers with the knowledge and tools to make a difference. Visiting volunteers provide companionship, emotional support, and occasionally, errands or some light help with housework. Over time, these volunteers make a lasting connection and impact with the person they visit.

Recently, Gail sat down with Tony Heyl, ALS United Mid-Atlantic’s Director of Communication and Public Policy, to discuss what makes the Visiting Volunteer program so special.

ALS United Mid-Atlantic is grateful for everything Gail has done to support people with ALS and their families.
