Workplace Giving: An Easy Way to Make a Big Difference!

Burt Holland (left) and David Thorpe (right)

Dr. Burt Holland was my doctoral advisor at Temple University in the mid-1990s. While I was working towards my PhD in Statistics, my house burned down, taking with it all my research. Our home was a total loss.

For six months, Burt reached out to me to regularly check on how our recovery was going. Burt helped me recreate more than 2 years of research that had been lost. I completed my degree in 1998 only because of Burt and his help.

Burt was diagnosed with ALS in early 2008 and passed away in June 2010. I still think of him often and though my now-adult children never met him, they know Burt’s name, his legacy, and what he meant to their mother and me.

I am honored and grateful to have had the privilege of knowing someone like Burt who was so impactful to my life and to the person I became.

I give to ALS United Mid-Atlantic monthly through my workplace. The need is there every moment of every day, and the workplace giving program helps me maintain ALS support as a personal priority even when I might get distracted with life’s other happenings.

Workplace and employee giving programs allow employees to set up payroll deductions to support the charities they care about. Check with your human resources or community relations department to learn more. It’s a simple, convenient way to support the ALS community.

If you are a New Jersey or Pennsylvania State employee or a Federal employee, ALS United Mid-Atlantic participates in their employee giving programs.

If your company is affiliated with Creating Healthier Communities (CHC) or the United Way, ALS United Mid-Atlantic is too!

Some companies also offer an employer matching gift program. To learn more about how you can increase the impact of your gift, please visit the Employee Matching Gift page.
